Theme/Title

A page for brainstorming exhibition titles and the themes related to these suggestions.

Something to consider:

What kind of general vibe to we want to give out at our exhibition?

Innovation? Sustainable practice? Beauty? All of the above?

Here are some of the graphics (and themes) from 2 previous exhibitions.

Outside of invite and chatterbox layout from 2001

Inside the invite, 2001. That arrow pops up.

Subject descriptors that I assume were on the wall in the exhibition space (and in colour)

2004’s mini CD and envelope (hand printed I’m guessing).

The one page exhibition ‘catalogue’, inside and outside. 2004.

Here are some ideas Tristan had:

Or working with the exploded view. Nice.

And here’s one from Mitch:

Here’s an update from Tristan, working with the title ‘Final Assembly’. Looking pretty fiiiiine:

The latest from Youssef:

I think it was Ben who proposed “Do you wanna play?”
Suggests an overall positive experience – always a good thing!

What about some grossly overused and abused qoutes?

Sim and I were brainstorming over coffee this morning (some rough ideas and themes):

    – Platform (alluding to the gradex as a springboard to our career)
    – Gangplank (we be walkin’ it, maytees! Aaarrrr!). Pirates vs. Ninjas? Oh so pop culture
    – 2010 something – in Roman Numerals 2010 = MMX (MsqauredX?)
    – Design = life = O2. Therefore M2X (H2O) Thinking molecular looking logo
    – Version 4.0
    – up/forward/next/new (I was actually thinking that these would be focus themes but the phrase itself is interesting as a name)
    – Push-up (haha!)
    – Futurism! Neo Deco! (ooohh imagine the invites) reflecting contemporary view of aesthetics as indicator of quality functionality
    – Time: ‘Clockwise’ – moving forward, contemporary, now, aware of the time(s)
    – Insight/intuition – a play on the ‘i’ generation? iWant iGrad
    – Sublime/wonderment/awe
    – ‘in motion’ catch us now before we all go our separate ways – careers taking off
    – ‘in the loop’ (infinity loop as a symbol) meaning this is the point where we cross over to professional, but we’ll be back doing this kind of thing (design/exhibit) periodically for ever…? Associations with a cycle and permanency

Really like the name “Final Assembly”!

Lara look at fonts on http://www.da-font.com šŸ™‚

(What’s the crazy cluttered image on the right?)

Ah yes, sorry about that – I’ll make it bigger so we can see what’s going on.
The idea is that we have some large scale graphics of something (it’s kept ambiguous) exploded, and the screw is part 4. Then we can use the exploded image on large spaces that would otherwise be boring and white (vacant wall/plinths, for example). An allusion to ID’s scope of scale – we consider not only the individual parts in a product but the system that surround it and the service it provides…

Both Tristan’s and Mitch’s are really good,
M’s is more dramatic with colours and bold circular motion- it really grabs your eye. May I suggest the text is bolder as the design itself may ‘be it’ but text should always be very legible if its meant to be read. Reverse out type needs spacial care , particularly if it is a ‘fine line’ font. Even more so when a colour rather than white.
This is crucial when reduced to say, business card size. Best to evaluate all designs in sizes from ‘poster’ [large] to smallest intended size, inc. catalog/folio.
Interesting use of RMIT logo; that will have them scratching their heads.

T’s is more restrained and I.D. obvious/focused. Is that desirable ? essential ? Decision needed ?
Although we know the screw [fastener] is a vital element in the ‘Final Assembly’ of lots of I.D. produced objects, could it be a broader, bolder I.D. statement so the non I.D.’er sees more of the I.D. world ? Maybe not important if it is not going to be seen by too many people but if to be a poster too and are suddenly going to be appearing all over town so as to attract visitors this could influence a few decisions? Or is it primarily for catalog/folio and merely enlargement as a poster.
    Great title ! – double/triple meaning.
On a general note, as posters, are they to have other text such as – Date, location[explicit], contact…, website, etc ? as if they are, designs need to include space now [use latin txt]

Finally, if to be used on other promat; bus. card type size/other size and use, then different txt for different uses needs to be considered.
Maybe I wasn’t listening closely enough as to prime/only purpose so apols if this is superfluous.
    great stuff cheers Murray

Thanks for the comments, let me know of thoughts on a font if you have any… maybe more like this update? (Is it poping?)

Also the [final] graphic will be adapted to whatever is needed so its not a finished poster at the moment, more of a logo. Should have a print of some media examples next meeting. Cheers.

    Yo Tris,

Later variation looks great! I like bold “assembly”. Can you bust out a nice sans serif font version?

    25/08/2010 at 02:44

Yeah sure, did you have any fonts in mind?
I think its working better with a serif at the moment but have a look at http://www.imageupload.org/image.php?id=5151_4C73E800 and let me know what kind of font you want me to try if different from that…

No, doesn’t work either, it would probably only work in the same orientation as the first five out poster had, so big spacious areas for the writing and then the logo not as a ‘hero’ position. can you send me the illustrator file tristan that I can play a little?

Hey Tristan, missed you at the meeting today…?
Can you please send Youssef the .ai screw and the last couple of iterations you’ve been working on? We need to finalise the layout and start emailing sponsors etc.
And also could you cc me into that email?
      Cheers.
